General Bipin Laxman Singh Rawat PVSM UYSM AVSM YSM SM VSM ADC (16 March 1958 – 8 December 2021) was an Indian military officer who was a four-star general of the Indian Army. He served as the first Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) of the Indian Armed Forces from January 2020 until his death in a helicopter crash in December 2021. Prior to taking over as the CDS, he served as 57th and last Chairman of the Chiefs of Staff Committee as well as 26th Chief of Army Staff of the Indian Army.
On 8 December 2021, Rawat died in the crash of an Indian Air Force Mi-17 helicopter in Tamil Nadu. He was accompanied by his wife Madhulika Rawat and members of his staff, who were also killed in the crash

His father, Laxman Singh Rawat, was a lieutenant general in the Indian army. He was born into the Garhwali Rajput Hindu family and they have served in the Indian army for several generations. His father was Lieutenant General Laxman Singh Ji Rawat, who retired from the army with the rank of Lieutenant General. Rawat began his military career on December 16, 1978, when he was drafted into the 5th Battalion of the 11th Gurkha Infantry Division like his father.

Death
Rawat was the 57th Chairman of the Chiefs of Staff from September 27 to December 31, 2019. General Bipin Rawat, Chief of the Defense Staff (CDS), visited the Defense Staff College, Wellington (Nilgiri Hills) to contact faculty and official students of the Established Course.
An IAF Mi17V5 helicopter crashed in Coonoor, Tamil Nadu today, carrying General Bipin, his family and CDS Rawat personnel. The Indian Air Force announced the deaths of him, his wife Madhulika Rawat and 11 other members. An IAF Mi 175 V5 helicopter he was riding in crashed near Coonoor, Tamil Nadu. On December 8, 2021, near Kunur, Tamil Nadu, an Indian Air Force helicopter (Mi-17VH helicopter) collided with the Minister of Defense, General Bipingrawat.
Madhulika Rawat died Wednesday afternoon in a helicopter crash in Kannur, Tamil Nadu. Cds Bipin Rawat and his wife were killed while in the helicopter, after which the helicopter suddenly crashed.
